The functionality some applications provide is no immediately obvious from their name. Take Opera or Firefox for example. By simply taking a look at their name you couldn’t possibly tell you are dealing with web browsers. You know they’re web browsers because both Opera and Firefox and quite popular.

The CoolSoft-developed application Power MP3 Recorder does not fall in the same category as Opera and Firefox. Not because it is not a web browser, but because the functionality it provides is obvious from its name. As the name so adequately points out, Power MP3 Recorder is an application that will, well, record.

To be more precise, the application will record sound from any sound source, including the sound card, CD player, MIC, radio, and so on. All audio recording are saved as MP3 or WAV.

Power MP3 Recorder can automatically pause and resume a recording task. It automatically scans the noise levels and pauses the recording where there’s no sound; it resumes the recording when there’s sound.

By getting Power MP3 Recorder you will also get Power MP3 Cutter, another application developed by CoolSoft. Power MP3 Cutter provides the following functionality to the Windows user:
- Trim a big MP3 or WAV file
- Cut a selection portion out of an MPE or WAV file
- Add fade-in and fade-out effects
- Convert a WAV file to MP3
- Convert an MP3 to WAV
- Do batch cut jobs.

Please note that Power MP3 Recorder also comes bundled with AutoComplete Pro. The good news is that you can opt out of getting AutoComplete Pro during the installation process.

You should also note that that neither Power MP3 Cutter nor Power MP3 Recorder are freeware; both of them are only free to try. This means the trial version of Power MP3 Cutter is limited to cutting 30-second long segments. The trial version of Power MP3 Recorder will stop recording after 3 minutes.

Pros

  • Lightweight download (2.5MB)
  • Easy to use
  • Records from all sound devices
  • Queue recording is supported
  • Automatically pause and resume recording

Cons

  • Bundled with AutoComplete Pro (you can opt out during the installation process)
  • Bundled with CoolSoft Power MP3 Cutter
  • The trial version does not record more than 3 minutes per session
